TOWN Centre shoppers stopped what they were doing yesterday to remember those who died in the First World War and subsequent conflicts

They joined ex-servicemen and the Mayor of Oldham, Councillor Ateeque-Ur Rehman, to mark Remembrance Day with a minute’s silence in the Spindles Shopping Centre.

Workplaces and schools across Oldham also remembered the war dead.

At Radclyffe School, pupils wrote their thoughts on conflicts and the sacrifices made in wars on paper poppies and wreaths to create poignant display.

It also included historic newspaper front pages from 1914-18, photographs of local soldiers and information about the work the Royal British Legion.

Head boy Mohsin Khan and head girl Leah Metcalfe laid a wreath at the school during a short ceremony which included poems, the Last Post and a two minute silence.

Pupils at Crompton House School made ceramic poppies to create a stunning display for Remembrance Day. They were inspired by last year’s Blood Swept Land installation which filled the Tower of London’s moat with thousands of ceramic poppies.
