The retiring president of Saddleworth Rotary Club was praised for his achievements during a traumatic 12 months in office.

Peter Mallinson steered the club to one of its most successful years — despite last year’s Saddleworth Show washout.

Speaking at the club’s handing over ceremony at the White Hart, Lydgate, new president Stan Bowes said: “A year ago, at the start of Peter’s office, the Saddleworth Show — our flagship event — was cancelled for the first time in the club’s history.

“It was a traumatic and devastating time.

“However, despite high winds and storm damage, last weekend’s show was a great success raising more than £6,000 for local charities — a fitting end to Peter’s year. He is a real English gentleman.

“And he has negotiated with Oldham Metro to ensure the event continues with us working together for this jewel in local Rotary’s crown.”

Peter received a citation in recognition of the intake of new members.

Mr Bowes, president of the European Pallet Association, added: “Saddleworth Rotary has a unique feeling and one of my main aims is to follow on Peter’s work by encouraging new and younger members to join the club.”

Mr Mallinson, an accountant, praised the club’s members for their support during his term of office.

He said: “I am delighted it turned out to be such a memorable year.”

The club’s president elect is Rob Knotts, a university lecturer. A one- minute silence was observed for former club member Ajit Medtia who died last Friday after battling illness.
