TREE-TOP chop . . . vandals have struck in Lydgate
LYDGATE is in shock after vandals lopped 3ft off a Christmas tree just before the annual lights switch-on.
Residents were fuming at the incident at the junction of Stockport Road and Oldham Road, Lydgate.
Jennifer Greenwood, chair of the Love Lydgate group, said: “At first, we thought it might have been the strong winds that damaged it. On closer inspection, it looks like someone has climbed up our ‘Welcome to Lydgate’ sign, as the letters are damaged. It’s very sad that someone has tried to spoil the fun for so many.
“But it’s still our tree and we love it. Shame on the vandals, won’t be coming to your houses.”
The welcome sign has now been repaired ready for the switch-on, which is tonight at 6.15pm.
