GOLDEN couple: Jennifer and Melvyn Brierley
DOZENS of local children and cancer sufferers across the region are set to benefit from a kind-hearted couple’s golden gesture.
Instead of presents to mark their 50th wedding anniversary today, Jennifer and Melvyn Brierley from Shaw asked family and friends to buy a toy for the local Salvation Army Christmas toy appeal and donate it to The Christie.
They managed to collect 62 toys and raised £775, which the couple is calling a belated thank-you for cancer treatment Jennifer received at The Christie 23 years ago .
“We’ve been married 50 years so there’s not a lot of things we need,” said Melvyn.
“So we decided if people wanted to mark our anniversary in some way we’d ask them to donate a toy and ask for donations for The Christie.”
The couple, who have a daughter and two grand-daughters, celebrated recently with 150 family and friends in Shaw.
