The region’s roads are to get 50 more cameras to monitor congestion as the number of cameras is set to more than double.
IN the next four months 50 more devices will be added to the existing 29 to tackle traffic jams on roads across Greater Manchester. Across Oldham there will be new cameras at congestion hotspots such as Huddersfield Road/Shaw Road, Huddersfield Road/Mumps, Manchester Road/Oldham Way and Rochdale Road/Middleton Road. Owned and operated by Transport for Greater Manchester, they will be installed following consultation with council highways teams.
The new cameras are being fixed on telescopic poles which allow them to be manually raised and lowered as required.
The installation of the new cameras coincides with the installation of 30 variable messaging signs - the roadside displays used to post motoring safety and congestion messages. From April they will also display live journey time estimates.
