Dorothy Berry
ONE of Oldham’s oldest women has died in hospital after a short illness at the age of 100.
Dorothy Berry of Hollins was well known as the owner of a coffee shop, which sold sweets and tobacco, in Union Street from 1960-1975 with her husband Harold.
She was also an active member of the town’s history group and played bridge at the Lyceum. She celebrated her 100th birthday in September.
Dorothy was born in Middleton Road, Chadderton, but the family was forced to move in with her grandparents after her father died when she was seven. She grew up in the Travellers Rest pub in Royton - now the Blue Bell - run by her grandfather.
Dorothy had two sons, Andrew and Christopher, who died nine years ago, plus three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Her funeral will take place on Wednesday next week with a service and committal at Oldham Crematorium at 1pm.
