A STREAMLINED post office with longer opening hours could be opened in Uppermill, it has been revealed.
Proposals would see the branch on the village’s High Street modernised and transferred to premises next door.
The Post Office tells customers: “If the move goes ahead it will change to one of our new local-style branches,. part of a major programme of modernisation across the Post Office network.”
Plans would include installing two, low-screened, open-plan service points into the counter to offer Post Office services, with a shop next door. The new post office would open seven days a week from 7.30am-5.30pm Monday to Friday and 9am-4pm Saturday and Sunday.
Graham Sheldon (57), village sub-postmaster for 15 years, is urging customers to respond to consultation and have their say.
He said: “It’s for the best if we can keep the services in the village for local people. In Top Mossley, the Post Office moved into the newsagents next door and that seems to be working well. Most of our staff would move next door and we may even need more given the increase in hours, which is a great thing to be able to be open seven days a week.
The current Uppermill Post Office will become a retail space with a rental flat above it.
