Motorhome woman: my drink was spiked
Date published: 13 January 2016
A woman caught driving a motorhome while over the drink-drive limit will argue against a ban by claiming her drink was spiked.
Burnley magistrates heard how Kelly Owens (35) recorded 45 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath when stopped in the town on December 27. The legal limit is 35.
Owens, of Randolph Street, Oldham, admitted driving the vehicle with excess alcohol and was bailed to February 24 for a special hearing to hear her reasons to avoid disqualifiction.
Her solicitor told the court she accepted driving while over the limit, but had knowingly had only one can of beer with a meal earlier. Later she drank from a can of an energy drink not knowing her boyfriend had put vodka in it - and this could be reason she was over the limit.
