PATIENTS can now get support at home with the launch of Oldham’s Hospice at Home service.
Dr Kershaw’s Hospice is now able to provide support to people who would prefer to be in the familiar surroundings of their own home near the end of their life. The move follows the Royton hospice receiving a substantial amount of money from the Stoller Charitable Trust and NHS Oldham Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) for a one-year pilot providing with Marie Curie Cancer Care and the Pennine Care Foundation Trust
Dr Matthias Hohmann, clinical director for cancer at NHS Oldham CCG, said: “Some patients who are nearing the end of life want to be at home. Simple things like seeing the garden or a familiar view from the window can be very comforting. They might want to have friends, family and neighbours around — or perhaps they simply want more privacy.
“This new service will enable clinicians to bring care of the highest possible standard to these patients, while supporting carers and families.”
The Hospice at Home service will initially be provided to any patient registered with a GP in Oldham.
Hospice at Home care may be provided to prevent admission to hospital or help earlier discharge from hospital.
