TRIBUTES have been paid to a dedicated volunteer, campaigner and “true gentleman” Mike Levins, who died last week.
Thomas Michael Levins was a founder of prescription drug addiction support group Oldham Tranx and a volunteer worker with SHIELD, which helps psychiatric patients.
Mr Levins (81) began his nursing career at Birch Hill Hospital, Rochdale, but it was during national service that he realised his vocation was to work with pcychiatric patients.
After service he came to Oldham as a psychiatric nurse.
Barry Haslam, former chairman of Oldham Tranx, said: “Mike devoted his time, skills, kindness, and endless patience into helping and supporting numerous Oldham people over many, many years.
“He was my early mentor on the issue of prescribed benzodiazepine drug dependence and his subject knowledge was immense. Mike had an impish sense of humour, a ready smile and kind word for everyone. A true gentleman.
Mr Levins died following a three-year battle with Alzheimers.
