PRIZE-WINNING Tom Wood (16), king of the sausage.
A TALENTED young butcher’s brilliant bangers have scooped top prize in a “Tastiest Sausage” competition.
Tom Wood (16), of Farmer’s Choice butchers in Grains Road, Shaw, entered his original recipe in the competition run by Oldham Rugby Union Football Club - and the meaty mouthful was named a worthy winner.
The sausage, made to a secret blend of pork meat and sweet chilli sauce, was originally devised for spice lovers on Valentine’s Day. It proved such a hit with customers that shop owner and butcher Lee Brook encouraged Tom to enter it in the competition.
Lee explained: “I entered last year and came second, so I encouraged Tom to go for it. We sent over 10lb of sausages and were thrilled when it came first. I’m really proud of him.
Tom, from Milnrow, is studying joinery at Hopwood Hall College in Middleton but has worked at the shop for six months.
He said: “The secret recipe is not red hot spicy or overpowering but has a nice aftertaste. Winning is a great achievement; we’ll definitely be selling more of these in the shop.”
