Boarshurst Silver Band - the only Oldham brass band to qualify for the National Championship, with conductor James Garlick
AN Oldham band is definitely the best of brass after becoming the only one in the borough to reach the National Championships.
Boarshurst Silver Band, based in Greenfield, blew away the competition in the North-West Regional Brass Band Championships at Blackpool’s Winter Gardens to claim a top spot in the prestigious event in Cheltenham, in September.
Their placings and points saw them sail through the second section to take the place including playing a very atmospheric rendition of “The Mermaid of Zennor”.
Cornet player John Whittle said the success is testament to conductor James Garlick. “James joined us a couple of years ago and we’ve gone from strength to strength, rising from the third section last year. His new ideas and a great deal of enthusiasm have really brought the young players on.”
