PARTS of Oldham were left underwater following flash flooding yesterday.
A torrential downpour in the afternoon caused chaos on the roads.
Heavy rain caused the cover of a storm drain to lift on Foxdenton Lane towards Grimshaw Lane, flooding the road.
Also in Chadderton, cars struggled to make it down Broadway because of the water on the road, while Long Lane, Turf Lane and Haigh Lane were also affected with motorists warned by police to steer clear. Stansfield Road in Failsworth also suffered flooding.
The motorways were also affected with slow traffic on the M62 due to the flooding at junction 20 A627 at Oldham and congestion up towards junction 21 A640 at Shaw. There were large queues on the M60 around J22 for Chadderton as cars tried to avoid large amounts of rain water that had collected.
Middleton was the worst hit area, with some roads left deep underwater and Middleton Arena and Middleton Shopping Centre closed, where emergency services helped pump water from the entrance.
