A MULTI-CAR crash occurred on the M62 yesterday closing lanes in both directions.
The incident involving up to five cars took place on the eastbound carriageway at junction 21 to Milnrow.
Two casualties were cut out of a car, with crews using cutting equipment to remove a roof to reach them, and two others wounded.
Police closed the roads at around 12.50pm with the fire service and air ambulance also arriving at the scene.
Fire crews from Rochdale, Heywood and Chadderton remained at the scene for around two hours.
Drivers experienced delays after the motorway was closed to westbound traffic and the backlog stretched back to the M60.
Diversions were in place at the junction 21 exit.
