MANCHESTER CITY 1, EVERTON 1

It was all square at the Etihad after 10-man Manchester City scored an 82nd minute equaliser through Raheem Sterling to cancel out Wayne Rooney’s first half goal.

Rooney scored after just 35 minutes while Kyle Walker was sent off just before the break before Sterling’s late rescue mission and Everton's Morgan Schneiderlin received his marching orders just before the end.

Leroy Sane had started instead of Danilo as City made just one change from the side that beat Brighton.

There were early chances for Kevin De Bruyne, Nicolas Otamendi, Sergio Aguero, and Gabriel Jesus while David Silva hit the post while Phil Jagielka slid in to deny Aguero a shooting chance when he looked clean through.

City were punished for their wastefulness, though, and Wayne Rooney cranked up the volume of the boos against him in the Etihad in the 35th minute when he side footed Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s cross through the legs of Ederson after Sane gave the ball away.

Rooney celebrated his 200th Premier League goal with aplomb - his second goal of the season - and the watching England manager Gareth Southgate will have had plenty to consider out of an Everton team that fielded eight English players.

The drama wasn’t over though, after another England player - Kyle Walker - was harshly sent off for two yellow cards in the space of two minutes in the 44th minute.

Half time City substitute Raheem Sterling’s offered even more pace but his shooting was wayward - he wasted two good chances while fellow sub Danilo forced a save from Jordan Pickford.

The home crowd were tense before Sterling finally hit the target with a 12 yard volley eight minutes from the end after Mason Holgate had headed Bernardo Silva’s cross out towards the City man.

Morgan Schneiderlin was sent off for a second yellow card two minutes from time but Sterling and David Silva wasted two chances to win it in added time for City.
