Newton pushed all the way

OLDHAM racing cyclist Chris Newton sprinted to a narrow victory in the prestigious Rochdale Grand Prix, part of the National Elite Circuit Series.

The Beijing-hopeful, team leader for the Rapha Condor-Recycling team, edged ahead of rival Russell Downing of the Pinarello RT team to take his first win of the 2008 series.

Newton cruised to victory in the 2007 Rochdale Grand Prix, but things were much tighter this year as he battled with Downing to take his third win in the event.

"That was tough," said Newton afterwards. "I tried really hard and put that extra bit of effort into the race.

“I have been training really hard all year to get over the setback I had before the World Championships (he broke his collar bone) and I didn’t want to give it away so I tried really hard to get that win."

The Rochdale course includes a 300-metre climb on each lap, and Newton added: "I’m a punchy rider so that climb really helps me.

“It’s short and sharp so I can power up there and my recovery is really quick."

Newton got himself into several breaks throughout the race, including one with the experienced former professional, Malcolm Elliott, but they were pulled back by the bunch.

"I thought Malcolm and I were going to stay away, but all of a sudden it came back really quickly and it went down to a sprint finish.

"I was desperate to get the win because it does wonders for your morale.

“And as a GB rider trying to get to the Olympics, that’s important – to get some payback for the effort I am putting in."
