OLDHAM-based cyclist Chris Newton goes for Olympic Games gold in Beijing tomorrow, WRITES TONY BUGBY.

The 34-year-old, who has won silver and bronze medals at the last two Olympics, will be bidding for glory in the points race over 160 laps.

Newton (pictured) has claimed 11 medals at major championships and won world and Commonwealth titles, with the only one to elude him being an Olympic crown.

He admits this is likely to be his fourth and final Olympics, with his cycling swansong likely to be the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

Great Britain’s track programme begins today and hopes are high of a stack-load of medals.

Paul Manning, once of Mossley, has his sights set on gold in the team pursuit, which begins on Sunday with the final on Monday.
