Flying start for Phoenixs

MANCHESTER Phoenix enjoyed a perfect start to the new Elite Ice Hockey League season as they recorded narrow victories over Hull and Newcastle.

New forward David Beauregard bagged four goals over the weekend; netting doubles in Phoenix’ 4–3 opener in Hull and their controversial 5-4 shootout win last night against Newcastle.

On Sunday, Manchester’s first home fixture of the season was cut to just two periods due to appalling ice conditions which saw gaping holes appear in the surface.

After 40 minutes of play, a lively game was tied four apiece thanks to goals from Beauregard, Josh Garbutt and the outstanding Grant Jacobsen.

Both sides took a point each, but the ‘result’ was decided in a penalty shootout with Bruce Mulherin scoring the winner to give Manchester two points and the win.
