Hughes keen to conquer Europe

MARK HUGHES has reiterated Manchester City are determined to make their mark across Europe this season.

The City chief has seen his side struggle for consistency in the early part of the campaign.

However, he firmly believes a good run in the UEFA Cup can help stabilise their Premier League form.

City begin the group stages by facing Steve McClaren’s FC Twente at Eastlands tonight and are hoping to get back on track in the league after successive defeats by Bolton and Middlesbrough.

Hughes said: “We want to stay in the competition as long as we can and raise our profile.

“That’s the aim but it is a really strong competition this year. Right across the board there are top quality teams in the various groups.”

Hughes could have more attacking options at his disposal as Benjani Mwaruwari scored for the reserves in midweek following a long–standing thigh injury.

Darius Vassell also had a run–out after being sidelined with a knee problem.

But skipper Richard Dunne is doubtful after suffering fluid on the knee following the defeat by Bolton.
