THE battle for the North West Cyclo-Cross League title gathered pace with two rounds in two days leaving the overall points table looking close.
Macclesfield Wheelers’ ace Kevin Walford still leads the table with 907 points and veteran Dave Headon (Horwich CC) is second on 897, but their rivals closed the gap considerably.
Headon’s team-mate at Horwich CC, Dave Brailsford was fourth in the ninth round of the series at Wavertree, and then went on to win round ten the following day at Stadt Moers Country Park, Liverpool.
Midlands visitor Matt Denby (Zepnat Racing Team) won the Saturday event, the veteran pipping over-50s ace Roy Hunt (Colnago) into second spot by more than a minute, while Denby’s team-mate Jonathan Watson was third, another 2-30 off the pace.
Fifth spot from SportCity Velo’s Martin Woffindin helped him to maintain third spot in the overall league, but he suffered during Sunday’s race and was lapped by Brailsford and ended up 20th overall.
Brailsford took the win on Sunday by almost a minute and a half, holding off Anthony Morris (Evans Cycles), while Kitchin was third.
The league continues this Sunday with round 11 at Leverhulme Park, Breighmet, Bolton, starting at noon for the youth race and followed by the under-12s at 1pm and seniors at 2pm.
