DROYLSDEN savoured the most famous victory in their 116-year history last night when they won through to the third round of the FA Cup for the first time, writes TONY BUGBY.
The epic second-round clash against Coca-Coca League Two Chesterfield was finally settled at the fourth attempt when the Blue Square North team emerged 2-1 victors to become the eighth non-league team to win through to the last 64.
It was a personal triumph for Grotton-based Dave Pace, the owner/manager, who takes the Bloods to Championship club Ipswich Town on Saturday week.
Left-back Sean Newton scored both goals, his first a terrific shot after 31 minutes, the second a 55th-minute penalty after ex-Latics striker Matthew Tipton had been tripped by his former Boundary Park team-mate Danny Hall.
In between, Chesterfield scored a bizarre goal when keeper Craig Mawson’s clearance struck Spireites striker Jack Lester and looped back over his head. Lester was sent off late on for lashing out at defender Colin Cryan.
