MANCHESTER City manager Mark Hughes believes his side can return to domestic business with confidence after their trip to Denmark in the UEFA Cup.
Next up are title–chasing Liverpool on Sunday at Anfield, following the 2–2 draw against FC Copenhagen in the first leg of their last 32 tie.
An injury time goal from substitute Martin Vingaard, on his debut, denied City a morale–boosting victory as a blizzard enveloped the Parken Stadium.
Stephen Ireland appeared to have scored the winner in the 61st minute with a fine finish, after Ailton Almedia had hauled the home side level.
With Nedum Onuoha also finding the target, City have the benefit of two away goals when the return leg is played next Thursday.
But Hughes’ focus is already on Liverpool, and he said: “I think we showed in this game that when teams open up against us we can cause anyone a problem. If you allow us space we can exploit it.
“Liverpool are making a real challenge for the Premier League and want to be in the shake–up at the end of the season.
“We would like to think that at times they would over–commit and we would be able to take advantage of that.”
Even though Robinho missed a gilt–edged chance late in the game, Hughes was pleased with the Brazilian — as well as Craig Bellamy and Shaun Wright–Phillips.
“They were the trigger for the level of performance we were able to produce,” said the City boss.
“Our front three, Robby, Craig and Shaun gave them a problem with their pace and ability on the ball.”
Onuoha opened the scoring for City in the 29th minute when his shot squirmed under the body of goalkeeper Jesper Christiansen.
It was only the defender’s second senior goal, and Hughes quipped: “Nedum reckons he gave the goalkeeper the eye — and that’s why he scored.
“We will take his word on that.”
Almedia pulled Copenhagen level in the 56th minute, before Ireland grabbed his 10th goal of a productive season.
Hughes added: “It was a good finish. There was a strange reaction to the goal — but it was given. At that point we were very comfortable, so the second goal was a disappointment.
“As it is, we are still in good shape for the second leg and hope we will get the job done.”
