Merwe makes sparkling debut

NEW Werneth professional Roelof van der Merwe produced a starring role on his debut for South Africa in their Twenty20 international victory over Australia in Pretoria last night.
Captained by former Heywood professional Johan Botha, the Proteas won by 17 runs.
Right-hand batsman Van der Merwe smashed four sixes and two fours in a 30-ball 48 as South Africa posted 156 for five.
His slow left-arm bowling then claimed one wicket for 30 runs in Australia’s reply of 139 for eight.
Van der Merwe’s appearances as professional for Werneth in this season’s Lake Garage CLL will be restricted because of his Twenty20 commitments.
His skills have earned him a place in the Indian Premier League, which runs from April 18 to May 24 in South Africa.
The 24-year-old, from Johannesburg, will represent the Bangalore Royal Challengers and, following this tournament, looks sure to be in the South African contingent taking part in the Twenty20 World Cup in England (June 5-21).
Werneth have lined up a stand-in for Van der Merwe, but are not releasing his name until his availability is confirmed.
