SHAW’S Darren Stubbs won his third championship belt when he outpointed Carl Wild, of Sheffield, to take the vacant Central Area light-heavyweight title in a tremendous toe-to-toe battle at Tara Sports and Leisure Centre.
Stubbs dominated the first three rounds but, despite being under great pressure and looking close to being stopped, Wild gritting his teeth and showed plenty of spirit to fight his way back into the contest behind a stiff jab and jarring uppercut.
In the end, it came down to staying power and the rugged Stubbs continued to press forward throwing punches to ensure a clear points victory.
Oldham featherweight Alan Winterbottom secured his first win in the professional ranks, beating Walsall’s Steve Gethin comfortably over six rounds.
The experienced Gethin fought tenaciously, but Winterbottom always had the upper hand.
Flyweight Shinny Bayaar outpointed Daniel Thorpe, of Sheffield, but Rochdale super-featherweight Anser Hussain lost on points to Sheffield’s Mo Khaled.
Tyrone Nurse (Huddersfield) beat Abid Riaz (Reading) on points, while Dezzi Higginson (Blackburn) also had a points verdict over Carl Allen (Wolverhampton).
Trainer/manager Jack Doughty is hopeful that his fierce little Mongolian, Shinny Bayaar, could should be fighting for British and Commonwealth titles having recently qualified for British citizenship.
