Oldham notch netball double

OLDHAM Netball Club continued their strong tradition in the English National Clubs Championships by winning the under-14s and under-16s titles - the 36th and 37th national crowns for the club.

The competition was a round- robin style at the Netball Centre in Loughborough, with the three best teams in England playing to be the overall champions in the two age groups.

Oldham under-14s beat Essex side Star 21-12 and Poole 21-17 to lift the impressive trophy.

In the under-16s, Oldham’s first game was against Hucclecote (Gloucestershire) who had already defeated Hull Chevrons 31-19.

Oldham secured a 35-29 win and then brushed aside Hull 55-14 to secure the club’s second national title of the weekend.

The under-14s squad is: Charlotte Preston, Shannon Westwood, Rachel Bolton, Harriet Gill, Ashleigh Cruse, Ashley Stansfield, Linda Onuoha, Becky Greenwood, Bethany Lovell, Stephanie Rice, Jessica Greenwood and Ellie Wild. Team manager Sue Westwood, coach Mike Greenwood, assistant coach Michael Greenwood.

The under-16s line-up is: Charlotte Reid, Kathryn Turner, Hazel Taylor, Meg Harris, Becky Gregory, Becky Smith, Leanne Murphy, Jessica Retford, Charlotte Hannah, Khadijia Pemberton and Kirsty Bloomfield. Team manager Jackie Reid, coach Mike Greenwood, assistant coach Pam Hazelton.


MORE than 50 teams, including some from Nottingham and Birmingham, will converge on the Hathershaw Netball Centre on Sunday for the 2009 OIdham Netball Club Invitation tournament.

Five age groups, from under-11s through to under-16s, will be competing for top honours on the day.

The action gets under way at 9.30am.

Money raised from the tournament will help fund the club’s tour to Australia in August.
