DOUBLE ABA boxing champion Thomas Stubbs sets out on Monday to conquer Europe.
The 19-year-old from Chadderton fights for England in the European Championships which are being hosted by Denmark.
And it represents a new challenge for the Stubbs who has proved to be the best boxer in England over the last two years in the 48kg class.
Stubbs, who boxes for Northside ABC, is aiming to punch his way to glory on a wider stage.
And he has set his sights on having a tilt at Ireland’s Paddy Barnes, a bronze medallist for Ireland in the Beijing Olympic Games and one of the favourites for European glory.
Former North Chadderton School pupil Stubbs became the first Oldhamer for 21 years to win a senior ABA title in 2008 when he defeated Hertfordshire’s Ben Fowl in the final.
And Stubbs successfully defended it recently when he defeated two-times Commonwealth Games silver medalist Darren Langley in the final in Sheffield.
Stubbs is a member of the boxing academy at Hopwood Hall where he has recently completed courses in bricklaying and joinery.
But it is boxing which he hopes to build a career in.
He is a member of the sport’s development squad and hopes to be elevated to the podium squad which means he would be a realistic medal hope for major championships.
And being a member of the podium squad would provide sufficient funding to enable him to effectively become a full time boxer.
