OLDHAM Netball Club under-14s and under-16s - already crowned national champions - travelled to Pontins at Brean Sands, Weston-super-Mare, for the prestigious two-day netball tournament and came away victorious again.

There were 45 teams in each of the age groups with most of the top clubs in England and Wales competing.

Under-14s team manager Sue Westwood said “The girls were fantastic. All the other teams were gunning for us as national champions but we stood up to it well.”

The under-14s did not have it all their own way and were beaten by one goal in the first game on the first day by Eagles from Hertfordshire.

However, they got their revenge on Eagles in the quarter-finals by 11-6 and, after beating local rivals Tameside 8-4 in the earlier group games, followed up with a 9-7 win over them in the semi-finals.

The final, against Cheltenham, was a relatively straightforward affair for Oldham as they clinched an 11-6 success to take the title.

The under-16s showed their class by going through the two days unbeaten.

Like the under-14s, they also beat Tameside in the semi-finals to face Cheltenham in the final, which they won 10-6.
