HOPES HIGH FOR SUCCESSFUL SEASON

BOASTING 34 teams in three divisions, the 2009/10 D&J Builders (North West) Ltd Oldham Sunday League season starts in full this weekend.

Among the more familiar names are a clutch of new clubs gunning for glory over the next nine months.

League officials are optimistic of another successful campaign and were recently boosted by a complimentary letter from the Manchester County FA.

It praised the competition for an improved disciplinary record in 2009/08.

League secretary Val Broadbent said: “It was nice to be acknowledged by the County FA and I expect more of the same in terms of discipline in the season ahead.

“I think the progress in this area is down to Jack (Bamford) in his role as disciplinary chairman.

“Teams are getting the message and it is good news for our league.”

Bridge Inn, The Famous King George and Lark FC are new to the OSL, while Lowerhouse United and Limeside Athletic boast second teams in division two.

Chaddy End FC, the defending champions, entertain former title holders High Crompton CC on Sunday.

The top flight, comprising 11 teams, looks strong and any number of sides will fancy their chances of bringing Chaddy’s reign to an end.

At committee level, Jack Bamford is the new league chairman. Bamford was acting chairman for a spell last term following the death of Martin Buckley.

Although Clarrie Newman has stepped down as registration secretary, a position he had held for 26 years, he will remain on the management committee.

Newman’s replacement is Steve Diggle, who also doubles up as liaison officer.

David Thomas replaces Eddie Aspin as referees’ secretary.

THE Ashton and District Sunday League stage their first full programme of fixtures this weekend.

It will feature one division of teams, including newcomers Shaw Rovers and Manchester-based Kippax.

League chairman Peter Bird said: “I think if we can stay alive for this season and add to it next then perhaps we can go back to two divisions again.”

Halfway House are now called Golden Buck, while Springbank FC are now known as Khartoum Northern.

ALL three of local sides are in action in the Huddersfield and District League, which gets under way on Saturday.

In the premier division, Steve Southern’s Diggle, in his fourth season as manager, entertain Moldgreen at Churchill playing fields, while Uppermill travel to play Lepton Highlanders.

Despite a last-ditch attempt to avoid relegation last season, Heyside kick-off their division four campaign with a trip to Hade Edge.
