SIR Alex Ferguson believes Wayne Rooney has the hunger, determination and ability to become one of the world’s top footballers.
“Kaka, Ronaldo and Messi are currently the three best players in the world, but with the right progress, he could be up there alongside them,” declared the Manchester United manager.
Ferguson was speaking as the Reds prepare to play tonight’s opening home Champions League group game against German champions Wolfsburg.
It is five years since Rooney made a dramatic mark on his European debut, scoring a hat trick against Fenerbahce.
Ji-sung Park will miss tonight’s match due to a virus, but Michael Owen and Patrice Evra have been declared fit.
Owen has been suffering from a tight groin muscle while Evra has also been troubled by the virus which has swept through the club.
There is some long-awaited cheer for the injury-plagued Owen Hargreaves.
The Reds’ midfield player has stepped up his rehabilitation and could be set to resume full training within 10 days.
