Becks’ world in ruins

ENGLAND manager Fabio Capello expects to be without David Beckham for this year’s World Cup in South Afrrica.

England’s most capped outfield player ruptured his Achilles tendon on AC Milan duty against Chievo last night, sparking fears that he may never play again.

It is a huge blow to Capello, who spoke with Beckham late last night.

“We have to wait for the results of the scan, but it looks like he is out of the World Cup,” said the England coach.

“David is a great professional and has worked very hard to be ready for the World Cup, so missing it will be a big blow.”

It is expected to be three months at the very earliest before former Manchester United star Beckham can run, and double that before he has a chance of playing again.

More likely he will be out for the remainder of 2010 which, as he will celebrate his 35th birthday in May, raises inevitable questions about him ever playing a competitive match again.

Beckham will have an operation in Finland later today under the supervision of specialist Sakari Orava.

He is said to be “devastated” by the injury.
