The latest horses to catch the eye of Chronicle racing correspondent Keith McHugh...

BULLWHIP (trained by John Gosden): The less-fancied of two stable companions, this one bolted up in a Doncaster maiden on Sunday.

After winning by seven lengths, Bullwhip will not be done too many favours by the handicapper, but he could be a Listed performer in the making and would be interesting if turning up at next month’s Newmarket Craven meeting.

KIWI BAY (Michael Dods): Only fifth to Irish Heartbeat in Doncaster’s Spring Mile, but the first four home raced down the stands’ side of the track near to the main pace of the race.

Kiwi Bay was clear of his rivals on the far side and rates a good deal higher than his finishing position.

SMOKEY OAKEY (Mark Tompkins): Came from a hopeless position to be fourth to handicap snip Penitent in Saturday’s Lincoln at Doncaster.

Having dropped down the handicap since winning that race two years ago, Smokey Oakey is ready to strike granted soft ground and a crack at Newbury’s Spring Mile is next on the agenda.

SAFARI SUNUP (Peter Winkworth): Had plenty to do at the weights in Kempton’s Magnolia Stakes, but ran a blinder to be second to South Easter.

The winner is destined for better things, so this was encouraging from Safari Sunup, who can win a race while in this sort of form.

VISCOUNT NELSON (Aidan O’Brien): From a stable which has yet to strike form, Viscount Nelson ran an encouraging race to be second to the improving Noll Wollop in Leopardstown’s 2,000 Guineas Trial.

He did not get the run of the race and, with improvement guaranteed, could pop up at a decent price over here or in Ireland next time out.
