Wayne’s World Cup promise

WAYNE ROONEY vowed he would be fit for the World Cup after landing the Professional Footballers’ Association player of the year award last night.

The Manchester United striker gave England coach Fabio Capello a scare when he missed Saturday’s 3–1 Barclays Premier League victory over Tottenham because of a groin injury.

Rooney has only just returned from an ankle problem, but the 24–year–old eased fears over his fitness by targeting United’s May 9 season climax against Stoke City for his comeback.

Rooney was chosen ahead of Cesc Fabregas, Carlos Tevez and Didier Drogba for the prestigious PFA award, ensuring United have supplied the winner for a fourth successive year.

The Premier League’s top scorer with 26 strikes has been in sensational form this season, scoring 34 goals for United and eight for England.
