UK set for another Eurovision flop

SPORTS AND SHOWBIZ BETTING: THERE was a time when the UK’s entry in the Eurovision Song Contest was considered to be the one the rest had to beat.
Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have any Cliff Richard, Sandie Shaw or Lulu records in my collection, but they were big names in pop music during their era and had fans all over Europe.
Alas, the UK now submits songs from artistes most of us have never heard of and these days we finish far nearer the bottom than the top.
That said, we could have the incredible Leona Lewis representing us and nothing would change. Other countries simply don’t like us any more and won’t vote for us.
For what it’s worth, our entry this year is a little ditty called That Sounds Good To me by none other than 19-year-old Josh Dubovie.
To be honest, I have never heard this song and don’t particularly want to, even though it has some credibility, having been written by Peter Waterman and Mike Stock.
This pair made up two-thirds of the hugely-successful Stock, Aitkin and Waterman music factory of the 1980s when the likes of Kylie Minogue, Rick Astley, Bananarama and Sonia were dominating the pop charts.
With this in mind, I dare say our song will be catchy, but anyone who backs it to win Eurovision will get 150-1 for their money and that is an accurate assessment of its chance.
Those in the know reckon that Europe’s hotbed of popular music, Azerbaijan, will provide the winner in Oslo on Saturday night with a song called Drip Drop by Safura.
The best price you can get for this is a mere 6-4, with Germany next at 5-1.
IT’S back to Test-match action for England’s cricketers tomorrow.
England are 10-1 ON to beat a side they bashed away from home during the winter so a more attractive bet could be Alastair Cook for leading home batsman.
The opener took a liking to Bangladesh’s limited bowling attack last time and is likely to do so again.
RECOMMENDATION: Alastair Cook to be top England run scorer in first Test, 4-1 (general).
