THOMAS STUBBS: European medal bid.
NORTHSIDE ABC star Thomas Stubbs is through to the last eight of the European Championships in Moscow after winning his preliminary bout.
He saw off Lithuania’s Vishnyaufkad Marius 9-3 at the Palace Arena to set up a quarter-final clash with Ireland’s Paddy Barnes tomorrow.
Barnes, who clinched Olympic bronze in Beijing, beat the Chadderton boxer 18 months ago.
Victory earns a place in Thursday’s semi-finals. The final takes place 48 hours later.
Stubbs (20) is fighting for Great Britain’s 12-man team, which also includes fellow ABA title holder Antony Ogogo and Beijing Olympians Bradley Saunders and Khalid Yafai.
Look out for his progress in the rest of the tournament in your Oldham Evening Chronicle.
