RACHEL Connor’s father has been speaking of his pride after the talented teenager shattered the course record in the Tate and Lyle Players Championship at Hickory Point Golf Club, Illinois.
Connor (19) produced an opening round of nine-under-par 61 — a career-low score for the former Our Lady’s pupil –– on her way to a finishing position of joint 18th.
Delighted dad Brian said: “It’s funny how it worked out because I try to avoid keeping tabs on her progress too closely while she is playing.
“But I broke my own rule and kept checking the Internet for live scoring, and thought ‘oh, that’s really good’ and it went on from there! She just played magnificently.
“She has a lot of talent, I don’t think that’s ever been in doubt, and a lot of determination to go along with it.
“I think we saw that when she broke the record and I’m sure she will demonstrate her ability again.”
The previous record of seven-under 65 was shared by four players, including current LPGA Tour members Lindsey Wright (2004) and Jean Reynolds (2009).
Rachel recorded 10 birdies, a bogey, hit 15 greens and required just 24 putts to complete her remarkable display.
Added Brian: “You have to remember how tough it was out there. She was up against some fantastic opponents.
“Rachel missed the cut in the last two tournaments, but she’s always been very pragmatic and if something isn’t working, she will try something else.
“So she responded in style and ended up breaking the course record.”
As much as she would like to celebrate with her proud family, Connor is gearing up for the next stage of the US Duramed Futures Tour, in Chicago.
