England stutter through
Date published: 23 June 2010
England have made it through to the knockout stages of the World Cup... just!
They managed a 1-0 win over Slovenia thanks to a Jermaine Defoe goal but produced a poor second-half display that had them hanging on with some desperate defending.
Wayne Rooney missed a simple chance to make it 2-0 after the break and was later substituted.
And a late goal for USA for a 1-0 win over Algeria meant England finished runners-up in the group when a second goal would have been enough to finish top.
