Wearside heartache: Chapman’s Corner

MANCHESTER City kit manager and former Athletic star Les Chapman, from Delph, writes a weekly column about all things football.

Tevez’s face said it all

CARLOS Tevez’s miss in City’s 1-0 defeat at Sunderland has attracted a fair bit of attention.

Carlos is always quiet in the dressing room but you could see the disappointment in his face after the incident and I think that said it all about how badly he felt.

We had a lot of chances to bury the game, especially in the first half. If Carlos stuck that one away I think the outcome would have been very different.

Last week I spoke about the importance of getting three points or at least a draw before the international break, so it really is a sickener for the players to go away on the back of this result.

We play Blackburn Rovers at home on Saturday, September 11, and most of our international players won’t be back with us until the Thursday or Friday.

I DON’T watch a great deal of football on television unless it is linked to players I work with or have worked with in the past.

I will be watching England’s Euro 2012 double-header against Bulgaria and Switzerland though, and I really hope manager Fabio Capello perseveres with Adam Johnson on the wing.

Apart from Ashley Cole, Adam is the only natural left-footer in the England squad at the moment.

Along with a lot of other people, I believe he should have been selected for the World Cup squad in South Africa because he plays with great confidence and belief.

WHEN Rangers were drawn to face Manchester United in the Champions’ League it inevitably sparked the debate about whether the Old Firm clubs should come and join us in the Barclays Premier League.

Personally, I am happy with the current set-up. The amount of travel that would be involved if they played in this division would be quite daunting for all concerned, despite access to all the best hotels and modes of transport. Apart from their most local games, which would be at Newcastle United and Sunderland, it would not be very practical.
