Mersey date for Heffron

BOXER Ronnie Heffron earned a comfortable points victory over Billy Smith at Birmingham’s LG Arena.
Heffron (20), a member of Anthony Farnell’s stable, was awarded a unanimous points verdict by the judges after a patient and mature performance against a man 12 years his senior, who is renowned for going the distance.
The bout — Heffron’s first in five months — was part of the ‘Magnificent Seven’ show, where a travelling army of more than 200 fans from Oldham made themselves heard.
Next up for Heffron is a show in Liverpool on October 23, although his opponent is yet to be determined.
Smith was a very durable opponent and had only been stopped twice in 91 previous fights.
But Heffron won every round. He stayed behind the jab a lot and didn’t waste too many punches on the 32-year-old journeyman professional.
