Rooney: City switch never an option

MANCHESTER United star striker Wayne Rooney has rejected the theory he might have joined neighbours City in January.
City emerged as likely suitors for the 25–year–old during Rooney’s much-publicised contract row.
The idea of Rooney moving to Eastlands was a major topic of debate for the red and blue halves of Manchester.
But as he apologised to fans who felt let down by his actions, Rooney claimed a City move was always a non–starter.
"Believe me: if I had gone, it wouldn't have been in England," said the player.
Rooney has committed his long–term future to the Red Devils, confirming after scoring the winner in United's 1–0 Champions League triumph over Rangers on Wednesday night that once assurances about United's progress had been made, negotiations concluded swiftly.
"I spoke with the manager and (chief executive) David Gill. They reassured me the club was moving forward and from that it took maybe two or three hours to negotiate my contract and sign it," revealed the England forward.
Rooney now accepts leaving could have been one of the biggest mistakes of his career.
Rooney should retain his place for the encounter with Blackburn at Old Trafford tomorrow, by which time the much–touted arrival of Denmark international goalkeeper Anders Lindegaard might have been confirmed following the 26–year–old's arrival in England yesterday.
