NATIONAL HONOURS... Emma Dovey made her first appearance for England at the Netball Europe Championships.
NETBALL: NORTHERN Thunder and Oldham goal defence Emma Dovey made her England debut in the Netball Europe Championships — and came away a winner.
As a reward for an excellent season with Thunder in the FIAT Superleague, Dovey was invited to train with the national squad by coach Sue Hawkins.
And this opportunity allowed the talented player to stake her claim for an appearance at the championships, which this year were held in Northern Ireland.
Dovey was introduced at goal defence for her debut against England’s toughest opponents, Wales.
And she played her part in a 57–35 win.
England were also emphatic in a 68-34 victory over the hosts, when Dovey again came on as a substitute.
On the final day of competition, Dovey got her chance to start against Scotland.
She rose to the challenge. Working well with Team Bath’s Eboni Beckford Chambers in the circle and contributing to a solid defence throughout, Dovey helped England to a 62-22 triumph and the coveted title.
Dovey said: “I have really enjoyed training with the squad over the last few months and was delighted to get an opportunity to play in the Netball Europe Championships.
“I particularly enjoyed the Scotland game as it was my first start. Thunder are having a great season and I think that success has helped to gain recognition for my country.”
