KEEPING BUSY . . . Ronnie Heffron and trainer Anthony Farnell are gearing up for two fights in a week.
TRAINER Anthony Farnell insists his exciting young charge Ronnie Heffron is not fazed by the prospect of fighting twice in a week — and reckons a double victory can lead to big things.
Oldham welterweight Heffron (20), who has won five out of five since turning professional, faces a yet-to-be-confirmed opponent on July 9 at the ExCeL Arena in London, before taking on Barrie Jones seven days later at the Liverpool Echo Arena.
Failsworth coach Farnell hopes ‘Razor Ronnie’ comes through the first test unscathed in order to operate at full power on Merseyside, and justify promoter Frank Warren’s claims that a title fight is on the horizon.
“Frank says Ronnie can open doors by winning twice in a week, which is great to hear,” said Farnell.
“For people to be saying things like that about such a young lad can only be a good thing. It goes to show how big an impression he has made since turning pro.
“I am sure he could go for a title before too long, although at his age what is the rush?
“He is looking forward to putting his unbeaten run on the line again. The fact the bouts are so close together does not faze him — I don’t think anything does.
“The key is for Ronnie to avoid any niggling injuries in the July 9 bout.
“Even though it sounds like a tough task, fighting twice in the space of seven days has not altered our preparations much at all.
“The only difference is obviously the lack of recovery time.
“With that in mind he will get the Sunday and Monday off and when he comes back in on the Tuesday, it won’t be too intense. I will just keep him ticking over.”
Heffron has spent the build-up sparring with amateur world champion Frankie Gavin and former British welterweight champion Craig Watson, who bids to regain the title from Lee Purdy at Oldham Sports Centre on July 16.
Farnell added: “Ronnie has looked unreal in the gym of late. He is becoming a big lad, and I’m not sure how long he will remain a welterweight.
“Frankie has always been a big help and it was useful for Ronnie to spar with Craig, because he has a lot of experience.”
