SPORTS BETTING:

RORY McILROY is a deserved 11-1 favourite to win his second major title of the season this weekend.

Following his eight-shots romp in the US Open, Rory returns to America for the PGA Championship which starts tomorrow at the Atlanta Athletic Club in Georgia.

And if he turns up with his ‘A’ game, Rory is going to take plenty of beating.

That said, there is little value in his price and two players who make far more appeal at their respective odds are American Dustin Johnson and South Africa’s Charl Schwartzel.

Johnson is a major champion waiting to happen.

He already has three near misses on his CV and only a bunker penalty prevented him from winning this title a year ago.

Consistent, too, Johnson is just about the best player in the States at present yet can be backed at 28-1.

That is a big price about a player likely to be thereabouts on Sunday.

The same can be said of Schwartzel, the brilliant winner of the Masters earlier this year and a player who has finished in the first 20 in the last six majors.

Schwartzel was 16th in our Open Championship and, blessed with the knowledge that he can hack it on the final stretch in a major, he is way overpriced at 60-1.

The likes of Luke Donald (14-1), Lee Westwood (15-1) and last weekend’s winner Adam Scott (25-1) will justifiably have their supporters, but along with the rusty and out-of-touch Tiger Woods (25-1), they do not represent the same value as my selections.

RECOMMENDATIONS: Dustin Johnson in USPGA Championship, e.w., 28-1 (general); Charl Schwartzel, e.w., 60-1 (Coral).
