THAT boxer Joe Tomlin with his trophies.
WITH 16 titles to his name, 14-year-old Thai boxer Joe Tomlin has won more medals than he has celebrated birthdays.
After taking up the sport at the age of eight, success came quickly for Joe and within 12 months he had British titles to his name, followed by a gold medal for England at the Amateur World Muay Thai Championships aged 10.
Joe, who trains three times a week at Higginshaw Thai Boxing, has since claimed two European crowns and numerous regional and English trophies, as well as the British Thai Boxing title in July.
Joe’s success earned him an international award from the Federation of Schools Sports Association (FOSSA) earlier this year.
And the talented youngster, who will next compete at the Amateur World Muay Thai Championships in March 2012, could soon be adding another award to his long list of achievements — he has been nominated for a Pride In Oldham Awards in the sports achiever category.
Proud mum Holly said: “Joe’s an inspiration to all youngsters wanting to compete in a sport.”
And the Waterhead Academy student, who is in the running to be in the Olympic Torch Relay, is just as successful in the classroom.
“Although Joe is committed to training this does not interfere with his school work,” added Holly.
“He’s very academic and he’s just received a ‘B’ in GCSE Maths.
“Joe enjoys passing on the techniques and knowledge he has to all the students.
“Last year his granddad was gravely ill and has never regained his original mobility and zest for life, so Joe takes it upon himself to do errands for him, jobs round the house and always ensures that he's okay.
“Joe always calls in everyday after school.
“After every fight he has he always makes sure it is his granddad he calls first to tell him all the news.
“The sky is the limit for Joe as far as he’s concerned and we are so proud of what he has accomplished in such a short time.”
