NETBALL: NORTHERN Thunder’s Suzy Chapman bagged the coach of the year award at the National Netball Goalden Globes at a glittering ceremony in Leicester.

Chapman saw off stiff competition from eight other nominees to claim the prestigious gong, which acknowledges the achievements of the UK’s top sporting volunteers.

She has enjoyed three successful years with the club and last season she helped guide Thunder to their best ever finish — second spot in the Fiat Superleague.

Had it not been for a string of injuries to a key players, the club could have made their first ever Grand Final appearance.

Chapman stepped up to the head coach role vacated by her friend and mentor Mike Greenwood, who stepped down due to ill-health.

After receiving the award, she revealed her gratitude to Greenwood and former England coach Sue Hawkins, who invited Chapman to England sessions and kept in regular contact throughout the campaign.

“I am over the moon and still can’t believe I won the award,” she said

“I could not have done this without the mentoring from Mike, who has taught me so much.”

“I would also like to thank Sue Hawkins, who stepped in when I had to take over the head coach role and gave me some valuable advice along the way.”

Thunder captain Jade Clarke was delighted to see her role model rewarded for her dedicated service to the club.

She said: “As a coach Suzy brings infectious enthusiasm and a clear understanding of an individual's needs. This award is certainly well deserved.”
