Trust secure historic cap

New South Wales R.L. Cap 1908
THE Oldham Rugby League Heritage Trust have obtained, through a private sale, the New South Wales Rugby League cap awarded to former Oldham RL player Tom McCabe for his appearance against New Zealand.
It is believed to be the earliest of Australian representative caps and the Trust are delighted to add it to their collection.
McCabe, brought up in Widnes, migrated to Australia in 1906, and helped set up the NSW Rugby League.
Soon after, New Zealand played two matches against New South Wales. They were the first representative matches played in Australia under northern union, later to become rugby league rules. McCabe played in the second of the two games.
Australia’s first tour to England came at the end of 1908 with McCabe selected.
Following the trip, McCabe signed for played for Oldham, playing in the 1910 and 1911 Championship finals. He also won three Lancashire Cup final medals during one of the club’s most successful periods.
