UPPERMILL climbed to second place in the Huddersfield and District League Division One table courtesy of a 3-1 win at Holmbridge.
The visitors nearly took the lead after five minutes, only for Andrew Pheby’s stinging effort to fly just over the bar.
Soon afterwards an interchange between Pheby, Jake Jacobs and Dave Taylor nearly led to a goal but the goalkeeper was alive to the danger, before Ventress had a volley well saved.
Jacobs cut inside and curled the ball against the post with 18 minutes on the clock.
Uppermill took the lead 10 minutes before the break.
Mark Jackson beat two men down the left and found Jacobs. He fed Taylor, who fooled the defender and fired in.
Holmbridge came out fighting in the second period and should have done better with a decent chance one minute after the restart, but they missed the target.
And they paid the price barely 10 minutes later when
Gareth Chew bundled home Chris Moores’ fine delivery at the second time of asking.
Uppermill were 3-0 up before the hour mark. Kristian Ventress latched onto Chew’s clever flick and unselfishly rolled the ball to Jackson, who converted the chance from close range.
Ventress hit the underside of the bar and Pheby was denied before Holmbridge grabbed a consolation goal from a set-piece.
Division Two action saw Heyside lose 3-2 at Shelley despite twice coming from behind to equalise.
Danny Cashin and Marc Mitchell were on the mark for the visitors, who conceded the decisive goal with 10 minutes remaining.
In Reserves Division Two, Heyside were thumped 5-1 by leaders Uppermill ‘A’. Jake Warburton netted for Heyside.
