MANCHESTER City’s 2-1 win at Porto in the Europa League set us up nicely for tomorrow’s return leg at the Etihad Stadium.
We showed good character to recover after conceding an early goal. Our hosts, who had not lost on home soil all season, looked so sharp in the first 20 minutes but we bounced back.
Sergio Aguero popped up with a late winner and he will be delighted after a bit of a lean spell in front of goal.
Although it was a flying visit, I enjoyed our time in Portugal as it is a beautiful place and the hotel was fantastic.
We trained on the Astroturf at Boavista’s ground. The once famous club have fallen from grace in recent years but the facilities are superb.
I enjoyed a rare free weekend due to our untimely exit from the FA Cup, but this week has been busy because some new training gear arrived at the ground.
All eyes are on tomorrow’s tea-time clash with Porto and the lads will be looking to finish off the job and advance to the last 16 of the competition.
Andre Villas-Boas is under even more scrutiny after his Chelsea side stuttered to a 1-1 home draw with Birmingham in the FA Cup.
And another manager feeling the heat, Arsenal’s Arsene Wenger, will have been distraught to see the Gunners crash out following a 2-0 loss at Sunderland.
I feel Wenger’s excellent track record at the club buys him more time, but Villas-Boas does not have that luxury and I can see him leaving Stamford Bridge sooner rather than later.
In my eyes, Arsenal are still more likely to claim fourth spot in the Barclays Premier League table.
MY old team, Oldham Athletic, went down to a 5-0 defeat at MK Dons in npower League One.
I was on the receiving end of a few heavy losses during my time at Latics and the only way to deal with it is to put it behind you and go out more determined than ever in the next match.
I am sure manager Paul Dickov will have had serious words with his players during the first training session of the week, and I predict he will get a positive response.
Rather than dwelling on losing to a good MK Dons outfit, the players need to put all their energy into preparing for Saturday’s home clash with Tranmere — and then get three points.
