Young in fresh spot of bother
Date published: 17 April 2012
Seven days after Manchester United’s Ashley Young got himself embroiled in a spot–kick argument for falling very easily under a challenge, he was back in the firing line for falling under minimal contact from Ciaran Clark.
The incident prompted adverse reaction from a variety of sources. Sir Alex Ferguson was forthright in his view that referee Mark Halsey was correct to award a sixth–minute penalty. While he accepted Young may have hit the deck too easily, the United boss felt it was out of character.
Wayne Rooney converted his 30th goal of the season from the resulting spot–kick before Danny Welbeck finished off from close range just before the break.
Rooney added the third in the 73rd minute before Nani fired home in injury time as United put further daylight between themselves and Roberto Mancini’s Manchester City.
