RONNIE HEFFRON: Damaged left hand while sparring.
Boxing:
RONNIE Heffron’s bid for Central Area title glory has been put on hold for the second time in six months after he injured his left hand in sparring.
The highly-rated welterweight was due to battle it out with Liverpool’s Liam Smith at Oldham Sports Centre on May 18 on a Frank Warren-promoted bill.
But the 21-year-old damaged ligaments in his left hand when sparring in Leeds — knocking out his partner in the process — resulting in the fight, also a British title eliminator, being called off. The Oldham show will still go ahead.
Failsworth-based trainer Anthony Farnell said: “Ronnie is distraught. He is too upset to talk about it but wanted me to let his fans know.
“Ronnie initially felt he could give it a go in the title fight, but it is simply not worth taking such a risk.
