Still waiting for crossing green light

LIBERAL Democrat councillors claim they called for changes to a dangerous crossing on Huddersfield Road two years ago.
The Chronicle revealed on Monday how furious mum Sarah Allen was left horrified after having to drag her two-year-old daughter Poppy up by her arm to escape oncoming vehicles after the traffic lights changed too quickly — dislocating Poppy’s elbow in the process.
The tot was left screaming in agony by the injury
The crossing was later timed as allowing only three seconds to cross.
Lib-Dem councillors say they have been requesting safety improvements to the junction since a serious accident in August, 2010, when a toddler almost died.
St James ward councillor Roger Hindle, who is also the Shadow Cabinet member for housing, transport and planning, said: “The Highways Department hasn’t come up with anything, despite being pushed on a number of occasions.
“Waterhead councillor Lynne Thompson and myself, along with former councillors Jackie Stanton and Linda Dawson, were calling for further work around this junction up to the last election.
“Linda Dawson was promised in April that repainting of various road marking were to take place. We are still waiting.”
Transport for Greater Manchester, which is responsible for lights, has not yet responded to a request for action from the council.
